Steve Park took the Dale Earnhardt team to Victory Lane in only his 12th Busch Grand National start. Park won by fighting off tough competition from a couple of Nashville veterans to win the caution filled race. The Bellsouth Mobility - Opryland USA 320 was your typical short track race. Beating, banging, and cars spinning everywhere. Steve Park's Chevrolet got tagged in the rear end when he checked up to avoid a caution early in the race. Fortunately, the damaged was only cosmetic. Park had to fight his way to the front, racing with tight packs of cars that seemed destined to wreck in each turn. Once he made it to the front, he had to quickly learn how to drive the Nashville Speedway better than two drivers that have years of experience on the track Jeff Purvis, the only three time winner of the All American 400 All-Pro race held in Nashville, took and chance a kept his old tires while everyone else pitted. He gained the lead, and was surprisingly able to hold it for quite a while. Jeff Green, a former track champion at Nashville, moved up to the front to challenge for the lead. Steve Park was able to out drive everyone else, and pull out to a substantial lead. With only a few laps remaining the caution came out as four or five cars piled up coming out of turn four. Steve Park was nearly collected as one of the cars rolled into his path. He was able to avoid a collision and continue on the victory lane.
His car owner, Dale Earnhardt, called Steve in Victory Lane to congratulate him on his win. Jeff Green, Earnhardt's former driver, came to victory lane to spray his old team with water. The team had not been to victory lane since Dale Earnhardt won the Busch race at Daytona back in 1994. |
